With the help of a mouse, we can move the cursor or any object on the computer screen from one place to another. A command, dialog box or icon can also be selected using the mouse. The mouse is connected to the PS-2 or USB port built on the computer motherboard. The mouse may have two or three buttons, which are called Right, Left and Center buttons.
The 3 buttons of a mouse are as follows-
a) Left Button :- It is located on the left side of the mouse. With this, the work of Click, Double Click, Point or Drag is taken.
b) Right Button :- It is located on the right side of the mouse. This is done according to the software for some special functions like opening dialog box or menu box, viewing properties etc.
c) Center Button :- It is also called scroll button. It is used to move a document or webpage up and down. In modern mouse the middle button is converted into a wheel. By rotating which the document or webpage is scrolled up and down.

The following functions are performed by the mouse-
i) Point and Select : - By moving the mouse pointer over an icon, if the shape of the mouse pointer becomes like a hand, then it is called point. Also a brief description of the pointed object may also be displayed on the screen. Mouse is also used to select an icon, text or image. There is an instantaneous change in the color of the selected icon, text or image. We can copy, cut, or delete the selected object.
ii) Click :- It is also called single click or left click. Pressing and releasing the left mouse button once is called a click. It is used to select an object or icon by pointing it.
iii) Double Click :- Pressing the left button of the mouse twice and releasing it is called double click. Double click is used to open a file or folder or to activate or start a program.
iv) Right Click :- Pressing and releasing the right button of the mouse once is called right click. Right Click displays the drop down menu related to that object according to the cursor position. Menu is a set of related options from which the options are selected by left click.
v) Drag and Drop :- Moving the mouse from one place to another place by moving the mouse pointer on the icon of an object and pressing the Left Button and holding the Left Button is called Drag. This also moves the object's icon simultaneously. Now dropping the mouse pointer to the desired location is called Drop. This Drag and Drop option of the mouse is used to move an icon, image, text, file or folder from one place to another on the computer screen or from one folder to another in the computer memory.
