Microsoft Excel
Introduction - MS Excel is a software of MS office package based on Windows. Which can be used to perform various calculations on the data in tabular form and perform analysis based on the data. Apart from displaying the annual income statement of a company in a table, this package can also display it in the form of a graph. Formulas and functions related to various mathematical and accounting operations are also available under this package. Under this package, there is also the facility of graphics in spreadsheets and it also gives all the options for printing and formatting of text.
MS Excel and its various parts
Two windows Application window and Document window are displayed on the screen of MS Excel.
Application window
This is an external window, in which the menu bar standard toolbar is displayed similar to MS word. Apart from this, unlike MS word, the formula bar is displayed in it. It has the following elements-
- Formula bar - Any text, data or formula that is written in a cell appears in the formula bar.
- Status Bar - This is the bottom bar of the application window that displays information related to the worksheet, e.g. if it displays Ready it means Excel is ready to accept the data, and if it displays Edit here So it means that the selected cell of Excel is in editing stage. Thus the status bar displays multiple messages from time to time.
- Menu bar - It shows us various options to execute the instruction. (File, Home, Insert, Page Layout, Formula, Data, Review, View)
- Standard Toolbar - It is displayed on the screen by default and provides shortcuts for commonly used commands.
- Formatting Toolbar - The formatting toolbar is displayed on the screen by default and provides shortcuts to instructions related to text formatting.
- Title bar - This is the bar at the top of the window, which displays the name of the workbook, in excel the file is called a workbook, its extension (.xlsx).
- Sheet tab - Sheet 1, Sheet 2, Sheet 3 etc. present at the bottom of the document window are called sheet tabs. You can go from one sheet to another by clicking on the Sheet tab.
- Scroll Bar - There are two types of scroll bar - Vertical scroll bar and Horizontal scroll bar. Parts of the worksheet that are not displayed on the screen can be viewed by scrolling using the scroll bar.
- Column Headings - Title in each column in the worksheet is Column Heading. Which are from A to XFD. Its total number is 16,384.
- Row Heading - The heading of each row of the worksheet is on the left side, called Row heading. Its total number is 10,48,576.
- Active cell - The shape formed by the intersection of Row and Column is called a cell. The cell on which your cursor is placed is called the active cell.
- Name box - The name of the active cell is shown in the name box, which is made by combining the row heading and column heading.
- Cell - The intersection of the row and column forms a rectangular box called a cell. Each cell has its own address, which is made up of its column and row headings. Eg- A1, A2, A3.......etc. Text, Number and Formula can be written in the cell.
